HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Junior Travis Williams intercepted a Jeremy Young pass in the end zone in overtime to secure an East Carolina 20-17 victory over Southern Miss Saturday night.

During the Pirates possession in the overtime session, freshman Ben Hartman nailed a 19-yard field goal to give the ECU (4-4, 3-2 C-USA) its first lead since the second quarter when they were up 10-7 following a Chris Johnson 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

The Golden Eagles (4-4, 2-2 Conference USA) were ahead 17-10 when East Carolina quarterback James Pinkney scored on a 1-yard yard run with 13 seconds to play in regulation. The score tied the game at 17-all as the clock expired.

Both teams had big plays in the game, including the interception that Eddie Hicks returned 87 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, giving the Golden Eagles a 17-10 lead. The interception return broke a 51-year-old school record and stopped a long Pirate march toward the end zone.

The teams were tied 10-10 at the half following a McCaleb 43-yard field goal.

Southern Miss' first score came on a 9-yard pass from Young to Ed Morgan in the second quarter.

ECU's Hartman also kicked a 47-yard field goal in the first quarter, a career-long, to give the Pirates an early 3-0 lead.
