BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- UAB's Chris Felder made a game-saving strip and Will Evans recovered the fumble in the end zone late in the game to preserve a 17-12 victory for the Blazers over East Carolina Saturday night.

Chris Williams came off the bench and went 12-for-16 for 144 yards and two touchdowns as UAB (1-1, 1-0 Conference USA) survived the wild finish.

James Pinkney went 20-for-38 for 280 yards and a touchdown for East Carolina (0-2, 0-1). He nearly pulled off a stunning comeback play with 1:23 left in the game when he completed a pass to Philip Henry.

Henry broke free down the middle and appeared headed for a touchdown, but safety Felder caught him from behind inside the 5-yard line and knocked the ball loose. It rolled into the end zone where Evans fell on it for the touchback.

Williams led UAB to most of its 223 yards total offense and brought the Blazers back from an early deficit.

East Carolina jumped ahead with a 22-yard field goal from Robert Lee with 2:49 left in the first quarter.
