Richard Carlton Barnes was a member of the 1962-65 East Carolina baseball teams. Barnes played three years at ECU under the greatness of Earl Smith (another Hall-of-Famer). In 1962, Barnes batted .463 which currently is the highest single-season average in school history.

The ECU Most Valuable Player in 1965, he received honors of All-Carolina Conference in 1962 and was an All-State selection for three seasons. In his career at ECU, he held records by receiving the most walks (16) and most doubles (4) in 1964. Two years later, Barnes batted ECU's third highest average in a single-season with a .447 mark.

Barnes graduated magna cum laude from East Carolina in 1965 as a physical education major. He went on to play professionally in the Cincinnati Reds organization from 1965-68. After his baseball career ended, Barnes returned to East Carolina where he received his master's in 1970.
